It is with profound regret and sorrow that I inform you of the passing on Saturday, December 2, 2023 of James Durante, who served as President of NYSHFA from 1979 to 1982. Jim was an iconic figure in the long term care profession who was recognized nationally for his courageous and staunch advocacy on behalf of providers, their staff, and, most importantly, the patients they care for.
In his distinguished career, Jim also served as President of the American Health Care Association, the national trade association representing over 15,000 facilities across the Nation. He was later appointed by Governor Pataki to chair the New York State Hospital Review and Planning Council, the body responsible for adopting regulations governing our industry. He was also instrumental, along with his close friend and former CEO of NYSHFA, Ed Stafford, in establishing a permanent scholarship fund for aspiring nurses which to date has raised over $ $305,000.00. He will be dearly missed, but his legacy of contributions to our profession will endure forever.
We extend to his wife, Sylvia, and the entire Durante family, our sincerest condolences. A Funeral Mass for Jim will be held on Saturday, December 9 at St. John The Evangelist Church, Union Street, Schenectady NY at 10AM.

The
attached letter was recently delivered to DOH Commissioner Zucker on behalf of NYSHFA expressing our significant concern, frustration and disappointment with the recent enforcement policies that the New York State Department of Health has adopted with respect to demanding absolute compliance by providers with the myriad rules, regulations, guidance and executive orders emanating from the DOH during the COVID-19 pandemic.
