CMS Update at AHCA Convention

NYSHFA staff recently attended a meeting with CMS at the AHCA Convention. CMS highlighted these keys areas of interest for NH’s:

  1. Increasing Vaccination rates. The federal vaccine mandate is coming soon. CMS recommended partnering with the community. Keep trying to encourage staff to get vaccinated.
  2. Adhere to Infection Control core principles – Hand Hygiene, PPE, social distancing- Keep Up Your Game!Do not only rely on “I’m vaccinated “!
  3. Maximize Visitation – Current memo gives suggestions, but not limitations (i.e., only 15-minute visitation). Physical distancing is key as well as other infection control principles. Holidays are coming up facilities may need to have scheduled visits instead of normal visitation during the week but that should be only one day. CMS stated that facilities cannot restrict visitors that are unvaccinated, however, they recommended this was an opportunity to encourage them if they are not vaccinated to get vaccinated.
  4. Addressing non- COVID related care – CMS is noting that survey data is demonstrating a back slide of resident care. Some key areas needing closer provider attention include decline in mobility, increase in pressure ulcers, weight loss, increase antipsychotic drug rate and increase in neglect. Additionally, some other CMS comments are:
    • Surveys are resuming and there is a back log of complaints.
    • Phase 3 guidance will be issued but no date has been set yet.
    • All facilities should have an Infection Preventionist
  1. Workforce – Continue to do what you can, monitor turnover rates, use tools and focus on training and competency. Do not wait to train your TNA’s to transition to CNAs. Start the transition to CNA certification now. CMS is working on a Staff Turnover matrix will be posted to the 5 Star in the future.

NYSHFA advocated to CMS for the removal of the 2-year ban on the Nurse Aide Training Programs to provide training to all available TNAs and prospective CNA applicants.
