Weekly Q&A
Q: Under our EALR/SNARL license we can care for colostomy; however, I am uncertain as to if it is strictly only emptying of the bag or if it also includes changing the colostomy pouch when needed. Also, can an LPN do it if aides cannot?
A: Per the Department of Health: “The resident must be able to do themselves or be coached verbally to do it themselves.” This includes emptying the colostomy bag and changing wafers. The Enhanced license primarily pertains to the accommodation of residents with colostomy bags.

Q: For a 30-day notice, if a resident is out at rehab and the rehab doctors are stating the resident will need to be at a higher level of care from now on, do we still need to issue a 30-day notice?
A: Yes, the AL community must issue a 30-day notice and ensure it is given directly to the resident/resident representative.
