As the long-term care industry weathers, the fallout from the COVID-19 Pandemic, addressing the resulting behavioral health concerns impacting staff and residents and their families adds another layer of stress to the recovery process. The contemporary long-term care community is challenged to address a broad range of emerging psychosocial considerations, as the next generation of resident is far more complex. Growing numbers of residents report increased feelings of depression and anxiety, substance use, and thoughts of suicide. Moreover, the assessment process must take into consideration today’s customer – far more independent, outspoken, and likely to march to the beat of their own drummer.

Understanding the symptoms of illness and the psychosocial manifestations of trauma are two critical elements of successful intervention. This discussion explores the clinical and social influences to be considered in the assessment of and response to the behavioral health needs of the community. Strategies for addressing issues relative to unsafe smoking, substance abuse, hoarding/compulsions, and related concerns are a focus of this conversation.
