Governor Launches Future of Healthcare Commission
NYSHFA|NYSCAL met with the Governor’s Office today regarding the newly established 13-member Future of Healthcare Commission. Announced in last year’s State of the State address, the Commission’s goal is to ensure that the resources of the State and other healthcare payers are optimized to enable the delivery of accessible, equitable, high-quality care for all New Yorkers, through a resilient healthcare ecosystem and a strong healthcare workforce.
The Future of Healthcare Commission is guided by a 13-member Board, chaired by Sherry Glied, PhD, Deaf of NYU Wagner. Other members include Richard Frank, PhD, a long-term care expert and Senior Fellow for Economic Studies at the Brookings Institute, former New York State Budget Director, Robert Megna, and healthcare economists and independent practitioners. The Commission will meet bimonthly to identify two priority areas for year 1 and build subcommittees around these areas. Ongoing Stakeholder Advisory Board meetings will be held with an opportunity for public input. The first report is due to the Governor in time for the 2025 State of the State Address and FY 2025-2026 budget, at which time the next set of priorities will be identified. The activities of the Commission will coincide, but not intersect with, the State’s Master Plan for Aging; the Commission is focused on the entirety of the delivery system with the MPA diving deeper into the issues.
The Governor’s Office was clear in that this is not another Berger Commission to close hospitals; it is not another Medicaid Redesign Team (MRT) and does not have budget targets to achieve. It is advisory-only, focused on the full continuum of care and will offer ongoing supplemental input to the normal yearly budgetary and policy processes.
NYSHFA|NYSCAL will keep you apprised of our involvement to provide thoughtful expertise to the Commission.
