DOH Advisory: Statewide Increase in Legionellosis Cases

New York State is experiencing a state-wide increase in Legionellosis cases. Four factors are likely contributing to this increase:

  • Weather patterns: rainy, humid conditions with elevated night-time temperatures;
  • The reopening of the built environment, including large buildings with stagnant water in the plumbing, and an increased use of cooling towers;
  • Seasonal and temperature-related increased usage of water features that may be improperly maintained, including hot tubs, swimming pools, fountains, spray parks, splash pads, sprinkler systems, garden hoses, and car washes; and,
  • Eased restrictions on mask wearing and congregating in public spaces.
