Health Advisory – COVID 19 and Flu Masks

On January 8, 2024 the Department of Health released the attached Health Advisory: NYS Department of Health Recommends Masking in Healthcare and Residential Facilities.

There has been a substantial increase in the number of influenza and COVID-19 cases in New York. DOH recommends healthcare and residential facilities advocate strongly for the use of masks within their facility to prevent transmission and ensure a healthy workforce.

Per a call NYSCAL had with ACHA this week, there are 10x more deaths from COVID than the flu. While there has been a decrease in mortality from COVID-19, it continues to present a risk, especially to older adults. Residents and staff should continue to be encouraged to get the COVID-19 vaccine. If you are having difficulties scheduling clinics, please reach out to your local Department of Health.

Over the past several weeks, there have been substantial increases in cases of influenza and COVID-19, at least partially driven by an emerging SARS-CoV-2 variant, and to recommend that healthcare and residential facilities advocate strongly for the use of masks within their facility to prevent transmission and ensure a healthy workforce. Thank you.
